4 Solid Minutes of Baby Chicks Taking a Dust Bath
No Harry Potter. No Marvel super-heroes. No 3-D Imax. Just baby chicks, doing what they do. This is literally 4 minutes of nothing but two baby chicks taking a dust bath. Both were dumped at the NYC pound in June 2011 as "hatching projects no longer needed after the school year ended." Fortunately they made their way to the Woodstock Farm Animal Sanctuary. Try to stay stressed after watching this![...less]

Kayli the cow meets the Steer
June 18, 2011: Kayli, a young "beef breed" cow, made a dash for her life from a slaughterhouse just outside of Philadelphia. She was being loaded into the holding pen of the Madina Live Poultry market where goats, sheep, chickens and other animals awaited death. This particular market is a Halal slaughterhouse catering to Muslim customers, but such "live kill" markets are extremely common in urban areas — they sell meat to people from many different cultures. Kayli saw an opportunity and made a break for it--running through the streets for close to an hour searching for safety. Wouldn't anyone? But sadly she was captured by police and returned to the same pen with the other terrified, doomed animals. Go to woodstocksanctuary.org and search for "Kayli" to read about the happy ending depicted in this video.[...less]

Summer the Sheep's New Wheelchair (Music: Undersea Poem)
This video, featuring music by Undersea Poem, is about Summer the sheep. In April of 2011 we noticed her back legs became wobbly and the problem progressed over the next few days. Blood tests were inconclusive but indicated that something was wrong, so we took her to the experts at Cornell Veterinary Hospital. They determined that she had acquired a parasite known as Meningeal worm. Carried by wild deer, when a sheep becomes infested with Meningeal worm the parasite moves into the brain and/or spinal cord and causes neurological problems that can be fatal.
She was given treatment but the damage to her spinal cord could potentially be permanent, and Summer, unable to frolic with the rest of her flock, seemed to be depressed and her condition had worsened to where she wasn't able to stand or walk around on her own. That's when we contacted Eddie's Wheels in Massachusetts. Well-known for their work helping dogs and cats with mobility issues, the mechanical genius Eddie Grinnell has also helped farm animals.
JULY 2011 UPDATE: Subsequent blood tests showed that Summer had a rare but incurable for of a disease and she was not able to recover. However, this video shows her strength and determination to have the best life she could![...less]

A Tale of Two Piggies
Two rescued pigs arrived at the Woodstock Farm Animal Sanctuary on 3/20/2010. Ms. Piggy had been rescued off the side of the road in North Carolina with a red stripe painted down her back -- the telltale sign that she was marked for slaughter. How she escaped, we do not know, but an awesome woman named Valerie (who happend to be a wildlife rehabilitator and cat rescuer) scooped her up and kept her in suburban Long Island in a large pen her husband built. Ms. Piggy was very well cared for, but now 2 years old and fully-grown she needed more room to be a pig.
Peter had a similar story, but the end result was very different. He was picked up as a tiny runt from a farm where he would've languished by a man who was charmed by the young piglet. Figuring he could always give to his brother to slaughter for bacon, the man raised Peter indoors in a marble countertop warehouse. He subsequently fell in love with the little guy, but even with the best intentions his lack of knowledge about pigs was detrimental to Peter's health -- Peter's diet consisted mostly of meatball heros, pizza, and bags of day-old Dunkin donuts. At only a few months this high-fat and highly inappropriate diet (pigs are naturally vegetarians but will eat anything if hungry enough) caused Peter to have some problems supporting is own weight. Coupled with the fact that he was living on concrete -- an unnatural surface for a hooven animal -- Peter essentially stopped walking. The man would have to lay down scraps of carpet to get Peter to get up to pee. We arrived in the nick of time, we believe, and hope that with a good diet and plenty of exercise 9-month-old Peter will make a full recovery![...less]

Coco the Blind Chicken Lays an Egg
(Hit "HQ" for a bigger video) Coco arrived at the Woodstock Farm Animal Sanctuary without the ability to see, so she needs special help eating, finding water, etc. She lives in the office during bad weather and has an outdoor pen when it's nice out. She knows her way around the office very well and can even find and jump on a perch at night. Since she's a "roommate" we've learned all the sounds and behaviors before she lays an egg, and so we were able to catch it on video -- this usually involves about 20 minutes of very loud squawking and searching for the perfect spot. WFAS board member Dawn Ladd coached her along, and co-founder Doug Abel was behind the camera.[...less]

Ciyalana the Tortoise Munches Kale
Ciyalana or "Ciya" (pronounced See Ya!) is a 20 pound African Spurred Tortoise who was abandoned in a NYC park about 4 years ago. He is estimated to be 11 years old, with a life expectancy of 70-80 years! Why is a non-farm animal here at the Woodstock Farm Animal Sanctuary? His permanent home, the Lower East Side Ecology Center in Manhattan, is undergoing major renovations over the next year, and we've agreed to provide a loving foster home for this little guy in the meantime.[...less]

Fern the Kid arrives at Woodstock Sanctuary
(BE SURE TO HIT THE "HQ" BUTTON FOR SHARPEST IMAGE) Fern is a baby goat who was born at a goat milk and meat farm in upstate NY. Several weeks ago a caring individual stopped by the farm to have a closer look at all the baby goats she could see from the road. She immediately saw evidence of neglect. One little goat in particular caught her attention - one of her legs was dangling from an obvious break and the tips or her ears were bloody & scabbed from frost bite. When the woman inquired about her leg the farmer shrugged, saying that Fern probably got it caught in a fence and it would heal on its own. Unable to deal with such suffering, she purchased Fern for $20 and got her to a vet, who was able to set her leg in a splint. She then called us, Woodstock Farm Animal Sanctuary, and we welcomed her with open arms. Almost immediately young Fern made lots of new friends and is enjoying her new-found life of freedom, nurturing care, and all the love she'll ever need.[...less]

The Valentine Piglets arrive at Woodstock Farm Animal Sanctuary
A man in western New York purchased 4 young pigs from an Amish farmer to raise for slaughter. He kept the pigs in a small, unheated garage, and one morning discovered that one of the pigs had given birth during the night. Twelve tiny piglets lay next to their mother, wet and covered with excrement. Eight were already dead and four others lay shivering and barely alive.
The rehabilitator, Shanon Rumbugh, received the call on New Years Eve and she rushed the piglets home. She took them home and tirelessly nursed them back to health—but it wasnt an easy road. Once they were stable, the original owners had the gall to ask for them back to raise for slaughter along with the others.
Now safe and healthy at the Woodstock Farm Animal Sanctuary, Nemo, Eva, Pinky and Wally are in need of both sponsors and homes! We would love to adopt these sweeties out all together to a loving, permanent home where they will be treated as beloved companions but we would be willing to adopt them out in pairs as well. They will also need to be spayed and neutered the former being a very expensive operation. If you would like to help us cover these costs with a donation or if you are interested in adopting them, please donate or contact us![...less]

"Downed" Animals in Texas Stockyards
WARNING: NOT SUITABLE FOR CHILDREN! Shooting this undercover video as a volunteer for Farm Sanctuary was an experience that made Jenny Brown decide to quit her career in film and television and work to help farm animals instead. The video was used in a Congressional hearing about "downers" -- animals too sick or injured to walk into an auction or slaughterhouse, who are typically abandoned and left to die. Jenny went on to work for Farm Sanctuary for about a year, and then co-founded the Woodstock Farm Animal Sanctuary. Some of this footage was used in the film PEACEABLE KINGDOM. Important things to notice are: overheated and overcrowded animals, a sheep with untreated prolapse, a sheep with a lame leg, dead animals in the same pens as live ones, a very pregnant goat being chased, lame and weak veal calves, a cow with bad lacerations and a diseased eye...[...less]
