"Our Hen House produces resources that you can use in order to find your own way to change the world for animals. Using video, audio, interviews, reviews, and the written word, it provides daily updates on what you need to create change. Changemakers come in all shapes and sizes -- artists, grassroots activists, academics, lawyers, students, business moguls, media darlings, etc. No matter what your niche is, Our Hen House aims to give you what you need to be part of a new world for animals." - Jasmin Singer and Mariann Sullivan, the hens of Our Hen House

  • Episode 35: “…our circle of compassion…”

Welcome to the 35th podcast episode of Our Hen House, featuring Woodstock Farm Animal Sanctuary Director and Co-founder, Jenny Brown.

In today's episode, as we prepare to come off of a 10-day juice fast, we will bring you our report from life in our vegan utopia. We'll also chat about vlogging – perhaps as a means of activism.

Joining us today is none other than the illustrious Jenny Brown, co-founder and director of Woodstock Farm Animal Sanctuary. Jenny will talk to us all about sanctuary life, including what originally prompted her to go that route, what it's like to rescue and rehabilitate farmed animals, and some star-studded upcoming events at Woodstock Sanctuary.

For the unscientific, unofficial Facebook survey portion of our show, we'll be sticking with the sanctuary theme and sharing with you some special stories of different ways people have been touched during sanctuary visits.

We'll also be announcing the winner of last week's contest to win a free copy of the novel, The Tourist Trail, by John Yunker. (And stay tuned for an upcoming review of the book in the next few days — with yet another free giveaway!)

All that, some vegan banter, and of course, tons of current events from the world of animal rights.

    This week’s news items include:

“Tasty Vegan Food? Cupcakes Show It Can Be Done” from The New York Times blog “Denny’s Serves Veggie Burgers” from VegNews blog “Bird flu jumps to pigs” from NewScientist “Horse Advocates Pull for Underdog in Roundups” from The New York Times

“Our task must be to free ourselves…by widening our circle of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole of nature and its beauty.” -Albert Einstein

You can listen to our podcast directly on our blog (below!) or you can subscribe on iTunes. Also, if you like what you hear, please rate it on iTunes, and don't forget to leave us a friendly comment! Thanks!

Both photos — the one at the top of the blog as well as the one within in it — courtesy of Woodstock Farm Animal Sanctuary and taken by Derek Goodwin. The photo at the top of the blog shows Jenny Brown (the human) with Nemo (the pig), and the one in the middle of the blog shows Andy the Steer.
