We sat down for a few minutes with 15-year-old Juliette West, star of the riveting documentary, How I Became an Elephant, which was screened at VegFest. Juliette was just 14 years old when she set out to Thailand to see for herself how elephants are mistreated there, to meet Lek, Asia's famous “Elephant Lady,” and to take part in rescuing one elephant, who becomes a symbol to the world of humanity's capacity for cruelty… and compassion.
We also bring you a talk by Chris DeRose, author, actor, and animal activist, who spoke the weekend of VegFest at Red and Black Cafe. Chris tells the story of how a homeless dog changed his life and transformed him into an animal lover and activist, willing to put his freedom on the line for the animals. Chris is the author of In Your Face: From Actor to Animal Activist and founder of Last Chance for Animals.
